Environmental Impact Assessment
In 1994, EPMS in collaboration with N.O.D.Consult carried out the finalisation of detailed designs and tender documents for rehabilitation and expansion of Dar es Salaam water supply and sanitation systems which entailed the preparation of an update of the environmental impact assessment and mitigation plan of the proposed project. The client was the Dar es Salaam Sewerage and Water Authority (DAWASA).
In January 2004, EPMS, in collaboration with EIMS –South Africa, undertook EIA for the 400-megawatts coal based power transmission line from Mchuchuma to Mufindi in Southern Tanzania. The project was financed by the World Bank and PB Company, South Africa.
Baseline Study
EPMS carried out a baseline study on the Proposed Afforestation Project (PAMIRA), Bunda District, Mara Region.
Who Needs What
EPMS was involved in the analysis of the capacity needs for the Implementation of the Kyoto Protocol in Developing countries, the Tanzania chapter. This work was concluded in 2002 and was undertaken as an input to the global assessment undertaken by EDRC, South Africa and ENDA-Senegal.
Indigenous Knowledge
EPMS was involved in the project for the identification of indigenous technologies useful in water and land management for combating desertification in the dry land areas of Tanzania. This project was commissioned by UNDP and completed in 2000.
NAPA
EPMS was a Member of the Tanzania team under the Tanzania NAPA project. EPMS is one of the 3 institutions representing the private sector and NGOs on the Tanzania NAPA team.
National Communication to the UNFCCC
Since 2000 EPMS has been actively involved in National Communication related activities and in 2005, together with CEEST, EPMS was subcontracted by the government and UNEP to prepare the Second National Communication to the UNFCCC. This is an ongoing exercise expected to be completed in 2008.
CLACC Fellow
As fellows of the Capacity strengthening of civil society in Least developed countries on Adaptation to Climate Change (CLACC), EPMS has been implementing an adaptation project on the impact of climate change on health in Tanzania. Also under CLACC, EPMS is implementing a three-tiered project: Setting up an NGO Group/Forum on Climate Change and Development; Setting up a panel for feedback on Tiempo Journal; Building up a library of resources on Climate Change Adaptation.
Climate Change Adaptation
Under the South-South North (SSN) Cooperation, EPMS has been developing project identification notes (PINS) for adaptation to climate change, notably the one titled “Adaptation to climate change through shifting of shallow water wells affected by inundation on the coastal region”.
Rio MEAs
In 2005, under assignment from the Vice-President’s Office ,EPMS prepared
(1) Guidelines on the implementation of Rio Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) for Tanzania with a focus on poverty eradication.
(2) Training toolkit for the implementation of Rio MEAs for Tanzania with a focus on poverty eradication.
Mainstreaming Desertification Concerns into PRSP and other National Planning Frameworks
EPMS prepared these guidelines for the Division of Environment, Vice-President’s Office in 2005. They also included entry points for integrating land degradation and poverty issues into district development planning processes.
Clean Development Mechanism
EPMS staffs are instructors for Earth Council Online Learning Centre for Sustainable Development (Geneva).EPMS is a local consultant for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) courses for Tanzania and other African English speaking LDCs. This involves staff from Tanzania Investment Centre, Vice President Office and Government ministries. The course started in February, 2006 and it covers all three east African countries, i. e Kenya Uganda, and Tanzania.
EPMS prepared a CDM national implementation guide
EPMS prepared the National CDM Investors guide for Tanzania (may as well be used as a template for English speaking African LDCs). It was commissioned by the UNCTAD/Earth Council Carbon Market programme. The Guide has been submitted already to UNCTAD/Earth Council Carbon Market programme.
Currently, EPMS is compiling a list of possible CDM projects proposals such as projects on Bio-diesel from Jatropha plants, replacement of diesel/kerosene operated generators in rural schools and health centres with solar PV, generation of hydro electricity from many different potential mini-hydros, shifting of shallow wells inundated by sea level rise along the coast of Tanzania, etc.
EPMS is also currently undertaking capacity development project for the Clean Development Mechanism (CD4CDM) with technical support from UNEP Risoe Centre. This involves assisting Tanzania stakeholders, including private entities build capacity on the CDM.
POPs
EPMS is currently implementing a UNDP Small Grants Project on awareness raising for Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), in collaboration with CREFT.
